Campeones Cup Partners with LAFC and Tigres to Unveil Soccer Fields Benefiting Youth Impact in Their Communities

NEW YORK AND MEXICO CITY (September 22, 2023) – Ahead of the fifth annual Campeones Cup, champions Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) and Tigres UANL will join forces to host community events in Los Angeles and San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico, aimed at supporting youth development. For the second time in Campeones Cup history, these community events will take place in both countries, highlighting the commitment of Major League Soccer and LIGA MX, as partners, to drive positive change and create a lasting impact in their respective communities.

In Los Angeles, LAFC, in partnership with the LAFC Foundation, Nicks Kids Soccer, and the Kellyn Acosta Foundation, will unveil a renovated soccer field in the Watts neighborhood on Monday, September 25, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT. Supported by Nicks Kids Soccer, the project aims to benefit hundreds of children weekly. Nicks Kids Soccer works with at-risk youth living in Nickerson Gardens, a housing development in Watts. This initiative is part of LAFC Foundation’s commitment to providing access to soccer for over 2,600 young people.

Hosted by MLS Season Pass commentator Max Bretos, the event will include the field presentation, a discussion featuring LAFC midfielder Kellyn Acosta and participants, and a youth soccer clinic led by players from LAFC2.

On the same day, Tigres UANL, in collaboration with the Paseo San Nicolás Soccer Academy and Fundación Nemi, will inaugurate a renovated soccer field benefiting more than 230 children from the Escuela Intermedia Profesor Rubén Darío and providing weekly opportunities for over 240 families in the Paseo San Nicolás neighborhood of San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico. This project reflects Tigres’ commitment to inspiring through soccer by implementing programs that promote a better quality of life, education, equity, and inclusion. Fundación Tigres’ initiatives have positively impacted families and communities, encouraging them to embody the club’s values: respect, discipline, teamwork, fair play, and non-violence.

The inauguration will include the restoration of the soccer field and playground at Parque del Paseo de San Nicolás. Additional efforts will involve reforestation, a new mural symbolizing community unity, and initiatives to include historically underrepresented groups such as women and people with disabilities through soccer. Over 80 volunteers, including Tigres players, staff, students, and members of the Paseo San Nicolás community and Fundación Nemi, will participate in the event. A brief opening ceremony will conclude the activities.

LAFC will host Tigres on Wednesday, September 27, at BMO Stadium (8 p.m. PT; MLS Season Pass) in Los Angeles to decide which league will claim the title. Tickets for the 2023 Campeones Cup are available at Ticketmaster.com.
