Cemex and Tigres turn the Volcán into the first stadium in Mexico with zero waste

Official Statement

Pro Ambiente will collect the non-recyclable waste generated in the stadium and use it as an alternative fuel for cement production.

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) reaffirms its commitment to the environment and works hand in hand with Club Tigres to generate green energy that will produce cement from the consumption of non-recyclable waste as an alternative fuel.

The soccer team became the first sports club nationwide to have a “zero waste” headquarters and achieve neutrality of the waste generated in the Estadio Universitario, also known as the “Volcán.” The non-recyclable waste will be used as an alternative fuel for producing the cement product at the CEMEX Monterrey Plant facilities.

Pro Ambiente, a subsidiary of CEMEX dedicated to the use of waste, will make this effort possible thanks to the collection, transfer, and energy recycling of waste such as disposable cups, food wrappers, packaging, napkins, among others. The procedure to neutralize the waste is that all non-recyclable waste that will be generated in the stadium during the Tigres Vs. America match will be collected, separated, and deposited in special containers to prevent sending it to a landfill.

We estimate that 30m3 of waste will be collected in today’s match. We will transfer it to the facilities of the CEMEX Plant in Monterrey, where it will be processed as green fuel for the production of cement. This action is equivalent to almost 400 cars not circulating during the day.

“At CEMEX, we develop solutions to address the sustainability challenges of large cities, such as non-recyclable waste. We did this project with Club Tigres and Pro Ambiente, which will lead us to achieve actions in favor of the environment, transforming waste into energy and thus building a better future for all,” said Antonio Balmori, Vice President of Urban Solutions at CEMEX Mexico.

Starting today, the amount of waste collected at the Estadio Universitario during each Club Tigres match in the men’s and women’s categories that will be used as an alternate fuel is equivalent to planting 82 trees growing for ten years.

“At Club Tigres, we are proud to be the first team in Mexico to achieve neutrality of the waste generated in a match. In addition to the sport’s commitment, we will continue to work on social and environmental impact issues that favor the development of sustainable projects, such as those of CEMEX, a company with which we have a close relationship. We will collaborate, among many other aspects, in promoting alternative energies to take care of the planet, “said Mauricio Culebro, President of Tigres.

“LIGA BBVA MX wants to congratulate Club Tigres and CEMEX for this great initiative, of utmost importance for the times we live in. Football, especially in our country, must be a generator of values. That is what the Club is achieving with these actions: raising awareness, caring about our planet, and favoring the improvement of the environment.

We are talking about converting 30m3 into new resources, either by recycling or making alternative fuels, which will greatly impact the city, the state and, of course, the country. All my recognition for this initiative speaks of two exemplary institutions,” said Mikel Arriola, Executive President of Liga MX.
